Bevier Mo. Oct. 6. Dear Belle:- I arrived home all right, but tired & worn out. I am lying down now but can't sleep any; it just seems like I am a nervous wreck. Every thing was allright & every body well, got along just as well as if I was here. Write me a long letter & tell me all the news. Love from all Kate. |
Notes: |
I'm not going to speculate on the family strife that caused
Kate to lose sleep because she was a "nervous wreck". There is
obviously a lot to this story that we will never be privy to. I
suppose that Kate and Belle were sisters, maybe cousins. Whatever
was going on, Kate is asking for an update. In the era of
postcards, she's looking for a "long" letter. Bevier is a small town about 5 miles west of Macon. That adds a little extra dimension to this card. Why was it saved? Neither Kate nor Belle had a vested interest in the Macon County Courthouse that they kept it for the picture on the front. Did the card have some sentimental meaning for Belle that caused her to keep it all these years? Was there something especially meaningful or poignant in the message from Kate that held a special meaning for Belle? We may never know. |
